It is important to think any practical way when planning any type of home improvement project in the future. Practical projects are much better for us, allowing us to relax and take our time while we do them. Part of being practical is setting a budget and not going over it. Older homes, those that were built 20 or 30 years ago, need to be cared for. Even though you may spend a lot and it does not bring you greater enjoyment, just think about how much more you will save later on. These home improvement ideas, all three of them, may require help from others in order to complete. Here they are.
Placing your electrical receptacles higher off the ground is a requirement in areas like a basement where water could pool on the floor. Once your outlets are high off the ground, they will be safe from the water when flooding does occur.
Of course you can probably get an idea by your location, and obviously a dry or desert type of locale normally will not have flooded basements. You do not have to go overboard with this and make them unattractively high, either. Your best bet is to talk to an electrician that can help you figure out what you need to do. Anyone that lives in an area that gets a lot of rainfall needs to be sure that their property drains the excess runoff. If it does not, your home could be in danger. You should have a positive slope leading away from your house for the water to drain adequately. You can also install simple to build additional underground drainage for more protection. All you need to do is dig a shallow trench and install some rocks plus PVC tubing that has holes drilled into it. Tubing will be fastened to the end of the drain and the water will be redirected away from your home. This technique can be done in a days time and will drain water away from your house for years.
Changing your air filters in your heaters and air conditioners is something you should also do. Air filters are definitely in any device that uses a heat pump. The reason you do this is to prevent dust from building up. The simple reason is the air flow will be reduced, and the unit will operate inefficiently. It is also possible that all this dust could blow into your home which would not be good. For the health of you and your family, your filter should collect particulate matter at the micron range.
Some home improvement projects have a genuine safety component, and you have to be aware of this. The danger for some people is they have no idea about such issues, and sometimes they proceed with no clue. Some projects are simply too dangerous to do and may lead to your death. So always take your time when embarking on any changes that involve electricity or the addition of anything that can change load characteristics.
